Alaskan Way Viaduct Closure Date Set
Alaskan Way Viaduct Closing: January 11, 2019
We are getting close to a historic change in the Seattle highway system. The Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has finally set a date for closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The original date was going to be this fall some time but after consideration of the holidays, and the intense impact this closure will have on traffic, the decision was made to wait till the beginning of the year.
It will take about 3 weeks to connect SR 99 to the tunnel, during which that whole stretch of highway will be closed to traffic. This will be the longest highway closure in Puget Sound history with the effects lasting an estimated 6 weeks.
Keep in mind starting January 11th the considerable time added to your commute in January and February.
